James DePreist, artistic advisor of the Pasadena Symphony, is recovering from heart bypass surgery and won’t be able to conduct its April 28 program at the Ambassador Auditorium, the orchestra announced Thursday.”

The Pasadena Symphony’s chief executive, Paul Jan Zdunek, said that DePreist, who is in his mid-70s, is recuperating in Scottsdale, Ariz., after unanticipated surgery last week, and is expected to be able to resume normal activities soon.”

Maestro James Anderson DePreist turned 75 on November 21, 2011. He is a polio survivor and has received a kidney transplant. In recent years he has conducted from a motorized wheelchair which elevates him to a height suitable for conducting. [AfriClassical.com profiles James DePreist (b. 1936), who also has his own website, http://www.JamesDePreist.com.]
