Liaisons: Re-Imagining Sondheim from the Piano

Sat, Apr 21 at 7:30 pm
Peter Jay Sharp Theatre at Symphony Space
$45; Members $38; Under 30 $15
Conceived and Performed by Anthony de Mare
*New York Premiere*

Everyone has a favorite Sondheim song... including other composers! As part of de Mare's inspired Liaisons Project, 17 of today's leading jazz, classical, music theater, pop, and film composers - including Steve Reich, Ricky Ian Gordon, Gabriel Kahane, Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR), and Fred Hersch - have come together to re-imagine their favorite Sondheim songs as solo piano works in their own distinct styles. For this evening of New York premieres, the great musical theater genius himself also takes the stage, interviewed by Mark Eden Horowitz, author of the acclaimed Sondheim on Music.

"De Mare's playing was superb throughout, a combination of lyrical reflection and extroverted pyrotechnics. It will be great to see how the rest of the project takes shape." -The San Francisco Chronicle

On the program... [Excerpts]

Tania León: "going...gone" based on "Good Thing Going" from Merrily We Roll Along
Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR): "Another Hundred People" from Company
