Deep River, Op. 59, No. 10 Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912)

I discovered this piece when looking for piano music by African-American composers. Named after the poet Samuel Coleridge, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was an Anglo-African violinist, conductor, and arranger. This spiritual is from Twenty-four Negro Melodies, arranged for solo piano in 1904. He said of the collection, "What Brahms has done for the Hungarian folk music, Dvorak for the Bohemian, and Grieg for the Norwegian, I have tried to do for these Negro Melodies."

Deep river, my home is over Jordan;
Deep river, Lord, I want to cross over into campground.
Oh don't you want to go to that gospel feast,
that Promised Land where all is peace?
Deep river, Lord, I want to cross over into campground.
