“Liège-born
Eugène
Ysaÿ was
a violinist’s violinist.” “Ysayë dedicated his Six Sonatas,
Op. 27 to his violinist contemporaries and paid homage by having each
sonata reflect the playing style of the dedicatee. Chicago-born Tai
Murray is the soloist in the sonatas and from what I hear on this
recording, a day will come when a modern-day Ysayë will be
dedicating a sonata to her.
“Murray’s
performances are dazzling and are filled with fire and more than a
fair share of wit. Her performances really suggest to me that she’s
having a ball playing this murderously difficult music. These are
intense works loaded with fascinating ideas, so I suggest taking it
one sonata at a time and let Murray’s stunning performances
resonate before moving onto the next sonata. This is a remarkable
solo debut and I can’t wait to hear what she has in store for us
next.”
