Renée Baker
Greetings and Happy New Year!
The CSO's African American Network, founded in September 2016, is thrilled to announce its second annual celebration of Black History Month.
On Saturday, February 24, join us for The Identity of Color: Black Composers in New Music, a screening of silent film The Scar of Shame with new music by Renée Baker.
Released in 1927 by the Colored Players Film Corporation of Philadelphia, The Scar of Shame
was rediscovered in 1969 in the basement detritus of an abandoned
Detroit movie house. It stands as one of the only surviving examples of
what the film industry once labeled "race movies:” films that starred
African American actors and were created for African American audiences.
The AAN is proud to feature this movie with original music by Chicago's
own conductor, composer and violist Renée Baker.
I personally invite you to attend this groundbreaking event on February 24.
After the screening, the AAN will host a lecture and Q&A with
Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association President Jeff Alexander, Chicago
Symphony Orchestra musicians and Renée Baker.
Hold on—there’s more! Stay after the event and attend the evening’s CSO concert! With exclusive AAN promotional code RSVP,
main floor tickets are just $35. Purchase tickets for both the lecture and concert and save an additional $5.
Tickets for The Identity of Color event are $15, or $10 for groups of ten or more.
Use the AAN promo code RSVP to purchase your Identity of Color and CSO concert tickets on cso.org,
or call Patron Services at 312-294-3000. I am also available to discuss
group sales or answer any questions; please email me directly at africanamericannetwork@cso.org or call me at 312-294-3557.
I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you on February 24!
Joyfully Yours,
Sheila A. Jones
