An Opera in Three Acts by Anthony Davis
Sergio A. Mims writes:
In
celebration of Malcolm X's birthday, I will be broadcasting the
Grammovision recording of Anthony Davis' opera X, The Life and Times of
Malcolm X on my weekly classical music program on WHPK-FM Chicago on
Tuesday May 21 from 12 noon-3 PM (Central Time) locally on 88.5 FM and
live stream worldwide on whpk
Music by Anthony Davis and libretto by Thulani Davis and based on the life of the civil rights leader Malcolm X. The
opera premiered in a semi-staged production in Philadelphia in 1985 and
received its first fully staged production at the New York City Opera in 1986. When
the opera premiered it was acclaimed as brilliant and "a stunning
success" but in recent years productions of the opera have been rare. So I
am very happy and proud to bring this important and vibrant work back
to the public
In this recording:
Eugene Perry, Baritone
Thomas J. Young, tenor
Priscilla Baskerville, Soprano
Hilda Harris, Mezzo-soprano
Herbert Perry, Bass baritone
Orchestra of St. Luke
