The National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) Responds to the STEM School Highlands Ranch Shooting
[Alexandria, VA] The
National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) is
deeply saddened by the campus shooting at the STEM School Highlands
Ranch on Tuesday. We offer our heartfelt prayers and condolences to the
families of the students, faculty and staff.
The year 2019 is only 131 days old, yet according to media
reports, we have already endured 125 mass shootings nationwide,
including eight school shootings. Our schools, churches, and communities
should be places of learning, celebration and growth, not violence. The
crisis of gun violence in our country necessitates a sustained,
coordinated, and collaborative effort involving citizens, elected
officials, law enforcement, and the entire criminal justice system.
"Tragedies such as these should not become the new normal for
our children and our communities," said NOBLE National President, Vera
Bumpers. "Far more is needed to ensure the security and well-being of
students, teachers and staff in our schools nationwide. At NOBLE, we
advocate for responsible gun control, and have issued previous
statements on our policy views on gun control. Those views are only
solidified in the face of rapidly mounting gun violence that threatens
the safety of our children and those entrusted to teach and care for
them."
The school shooting in Highlands Ranch, Colorado resulted in
one tragic death, as student Kendrick Castillo gave his life to stop the
shooter, and eight other injuries. Suspects in the shooting are in
custody.
