Deep River (H.T. Burleigh) edt. by Cantus (2:52)

Henry "Harry" Thacker Burleigh (1866-1949) was an African American composer, arranger and baritone soloist who is profiled at AfriClassical.com, which features a comprehensive Works List by Prof. Dominique-René de Lerma, http://www.CasaMusicaledeLerma.com Here is the entry for Deep River:

Deep river, and Dig my grave, for SATTBB & piano. New York: G. Schirmer, 1941. 8p. (#5815) Library: Schomburg. See also: 2 Negro spirituals (under Collections, above).”

Burleigh was born in Erie, Pennsylvania and died in Stamford, Connecticut. In his lengthy career, Burleigh wrote 265 vocal works and made 187 choral arrangements. In 1916 Henry T. Burleigh published Jubilee Songs of the United States of America, a book of arrangements of spirituals for solo vocal performance.

Comment by email:
Someone should investigate the lineage of Deep river.  Burleigh's setting, which we all know, calls for a range well beyond that of an untrained voice ("Oh don't you want to go...") and, unlike most spirituals is in ballad form (AABA).
