CLASSICAL MUSICIANS OF COLOR
The Executive and Artistic Director of The Sphinx
Organization says the number of African-Americans and Latino musicians in
American Orchestras has doubled since 2004.
Austin, TX – June 1, 2014 – Afa
Sadykhly Dworkin, the Executive and
Artistic Director of The
Sphinx Organization says African-Americans and Latino classical
musicians make up about 4% of the
roughly 800 orchestras in the U.S.
In the podcast BODE, Dworkin
also talks about the momentum, in today’s orchestras to train and hire
classical musicians of color, despite the financial difficulties many
orchestras are facing today.
You can hear her entire interview here where she offers suggestions on how
African-American and Latino faith organizations and community groups can support
classical music groups and expose more young people to classical music.
BODE is produced and hosted by Judlyne Lilly
Gibson, on the Second
Street Dreams Audio Network.
