Colour of Music Festival announces the first of four concerts this year:
FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 5, 2014, Charleston SC—Juneteenth,
the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the
United
States dates back to 1865, when on June 19 Union soldiers, led by Major
General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the
War had ended and the enslaved were now free. This event was two and a
half years
after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which had become official January 1, 1863.
Presented by the
Colour of Music Festival Chamber Music Series, Atlanta-based African-American
chamber trio, KAJ Trio, will present a special concert honoring
Juneteenth at East Cooper Montessori School, 250 Ponsbury Road, Mount Pleasant, SC
Thursday, June 19 at 7:00 pm. This special performance is sponsored by the I’ON Group and I’ON Club.
Since its inception
in 2003 the KAJ Trio, consisting of the Joyner brothers Khari, Amyr and
Jarin have been delighting audiences with their unique virtuosity and
musicality. Amyr Joyner debuted at the inaugural
Colour of Music Festival in Charleston as one of two concertmasters in October 2013.
“Civic engagement
and community gathering has been the anchor of the I’ON community from
its very beginning. For 15 years the I’ON Trust has led the way to
ensure access to a variety of arts offerings in its
awarding-winning community; this summer series continues that tradition
thanks to our sponsors and many businesses in I’On,” says Lee Pringle,
producer of the concert series.
Trained at some of
the most prestigious music schools in the country including The
Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Oberlin College and Peabody
Conservatory, the brothers have performed throughout
the US and abroad to great acclaim and in high-profile concerts such as
the 2011 YMCA Y-Stars Benefit Concert featuring Bruce Hornsby, baseball
great Hank Aaron’s 77th Birthday Celebration and Coretta Scott King and Family Celebration in honor of
the opening of Martin Luther King, Jr. Center in Washington, DC.
