HarbourLiving.ca: 'Is Celso Machado a musician or a magician? He may be both.'

[Celso Machado]

We have already announced that the Afro-Brazilian classical guitarist and composer Celso Machado will be a Guest Artist at the University of Florida's Brazilian Music Institute, May 10-14, 2010. Celso has now agreed to an interview with us during the Institute. The following article concerns one of his appearances later in the month of May:

“As a guitarist, he's an exceptional and idiosyncratic exponent of the Afro-Brazilian tradition that has produced such similarly gifted artists as Bola Sete, Egberto Gismonti, and Celso's occasional collaborators Sergio and Odair Assad. On percussion, he's uniquely able to conjure up the sounds of the rainforest, leading his listeners into its enchanted depths through hypnotic rhythms and birdcall sound effects. This eclectic multi-instrumentalist has been a Canadian resident since 1989, but he's really a citizen of the world.

"Please join us for the last concert in Poetry Gabriola's 2010 Words & Music Series. Tickets available online at http://www.poetrygabriola.com/words-and-music-2010 and at Artworks on Gabriola." [He has a website of his own, http://www.CelsoMachado.com, and is profiled at AfriClassical.com]
