[American Virtuosa: Tribute to Maud Powell; Rachel Barton Pine, Violin; Matthew Hagle, Piano; Cedille Records 90000 097 (2007)]

This week AfriClassical has posted a series of articles beginning with “San Francisco's New Century Orchestra Plays Works of 3 Black Composers June 5-10”. The New Century Chamber Orchestra will play Violin Concerto in A Major, Op. 5, No. 2 of Le Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745-1799); Lyric for Strings of George Walker (b. 1922); Sinfonietta No. 2, Generations of Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson (1932-2004); and Sextet in B-flat Major, Op. 18 of Johannes Brahms (1833-1897). A scholarly and informative set of online Program Notes has been written for the concerts by Dr. Dominique-René de Lerma, who has specialized in Black composers for four decades and is former Director of the Center for Black Music Research. They can be found at http://www.ncco.org/programnotes.htm

AfriClassical has received this report on concert preparations from Guest Concertmaster Rachel Barton Pine: “I'm very happy to report that rehearsals have been going well, and needless to say, the orchestra musicians love the music. I can't wait to share these great pieces with the public this weekend!”
