Her tireless work to unearth Price’s life story and enable the publishing and performance of her music paved the way for Price to emerge once more into the American public’s consciousness.
The importance of the late Dr. Rae Linda Brown’s role in the rediscovery of Florence Price cannot be overstated. Her tireless work to unearth Price’s life story and enable the publishing and performance of her music paved the way for Price to emerge once more into the American public’s consciousness.
This webinar marks the release of Brown’s posthumously published biography of Florence Price, The Heart of a Woman: The Life and Music of Florence B. Price
(University of Illinois Press), which represents one of her most
significant contributions to American music scholarship, a narrative
woven together from the researched documentation on Price’s life and
contemporary sources on Price’s cultural context.
Three panelists will bring together rich perspectives on Dr. Brown's legacy: Dr. Carlene Brown, a music professor based at Seattle Pacific University, will narrate the life of her late sister from a professional and personal standpoint. Guthrie Ramsey, a musicologist based at the University of Pennsylvania, will explore what Brown achieved in the writing of this biography, and clarifies his task in the final editing of the book for publication after Brown’s death. Finally, C.E. Aaron, an emerging scholar beginning graduate work in theomusicology, will outline the contents of the new Rae Linda Brown collection at Emory University and will suggest possible next steps this collection presents for scholars of Florence Price.
