NOW ON DSO REPLAY!
We were thrilled to present the world premiere of composer Nkeiru Okoye's Black Bottom at
the 42nd annual Classical Roots Celebration and Benefit Concert this
March. In fact, this piece was on the last concert program we were able
to perform at Orchestra Hall before The Max shut its doors due to the
coronavirus epidemic.
Black Bottom tells
the stories of Detroit's Black Bottom and Paradise Valley neighborhoods
— hubs of African-American community, culture, and prosperity that
flourished in the early 20th century. When the city of Detroit razed the
neighborhoods in the 1960s, thousands of people were displaced and
decades of history was erased.
