Dear
Dr. Conway & Friends:
Greetings
to the members
and guests of the
Morgan State
University Opera Workshop
on the occasion of
this celebration
of your
1Oth wonderful
season with
your production
of the
Gershwins' iconic "Porgy
and Bess".
Thank you for the
kind invitation to
share this
milestone event with
all of my good friends
from Morgan
State University and
the cultural
arts community in
Maryland.
Since its inception, the Morgan State University Opera Workshop has worked long and hard to advance and enhance performing opportunities for students interested in broadening their operatic and music theatre knowledge and experience. I applaud your presentation of two fully-stages productions annually so that students may learn role preparation, stage movement, basis stage and lighting design, stage and house management. I commend you for your commitment to excellence and dedication to sharing this wonderful repertoire with the public.
During my tenure in the United States Senate I have always advocated for increased funding for the arts and culture for institutions like the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities. Our federal arts programs help to ensure that the arts remain among our most enduring institutions.
The NEA and NEH help bring the arts and humanities to all Americans, regardless of their zip code or the size of their pocketbook. I will continue to fight for funding for these programs that not only help enrich our lives and preserve our heritage, but often provide our young people with positive alternatives to drugs and violence.
Best wishes for a great event and the continued success I know will be yours.
Sincerely,
Barbara A. Mikulski
United States Senator
