Black History
As we celebrate the 50th Year of the Voting Rights act we look back
through the generations people of diverse African diaspora backgrounds
and traditions have found spiritual fulfillment through works of music,
both in a religious context and through the transporting power of the
communal concert experience. This concert Road to Freedom explores the
African-American contributions to American music through Dvořák’s belief
that “the future music of this country must be founded upon what are
called the Negro melodies. This must be the real foundation of any
serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United
States.” Audiences will delight in this incredible program with the
stunning Dvořák’s Piano Quintet and Black composer Samual Coleridge
Taylor expressive Clarinet Quintet!
