PITTSBURGH (August 6, 2012)-The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the founders of Black History Month, is set to hold its 97th annual convention at the Westin Convention Center Hotel in Pittsburgh on September 26-30, 2012, and is seeking 200 local volunteers. The theme of this year's convention is Black Women in American Culture and History, and will feature world-renown poet Sonia Sanchez, civil rights champion Dr. Mary Frances Berry, Sweet Honey in the Rock Founder Bernice Johnson Reagon, and other scholars and leading experts in Black History.

Activities for the conference include a highly anticipated Author's Book Signing, an educational African American Heritage Bus Tour, a fun-filled Youth Day, an electrifying Poetry Slam, and informative plenary and interactive sessions.  ASALH will provide a host of unique opportunities for those interested in volunteering. Volunteer duties will include monitoring sessions, greeting attendees, assisting exhibitors, registering individuals for the conference, implementing Youth Day, setting up session rooms and door signs, and more.

ASALH volunteer training will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2012, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Community College of Allegheny County Student Services Center in Auditorium A, located on the corner of Allegheny and N. Lincoln Avenues.

If you're interested in participating in this valuable opportunity to be a part of history in one of the largest conventions to come to Pittsburgh, you can register online at http://asalh.org/Conference_Volunteers.html or e-mail Ann or Major Mason at annf.mason@gmail.com.
