Delaware Symphony CD nominated for Latin Grammy Award’s Best Classical Album

Awards ceremony to be held Nov. 15 in Las Vegas

September 28, 2018

The Delaware Symphony Orchestra’s CD, The Book of Signs, was nominated as one of five Best Classical Album entries for the 19th Annual Latin Grammy Awards. The album, the DSO’s premiere recording on the Naxos label, features Music Director David Amado and the DSO with the Brasil Guitar Duo performing Cuban composer Leo Brouwer’s “The Book of Signs” and “Concerto Caboclo” by Brazilian composer Paulo Bellinati.

“What an honor it is to have had our recording selected, from among so many, for Best Classical Album,” said Amado. “What is remarkable to me about this is that it celebrates not only the high quality of music-making on the disc, but also the importance of new music. I am very proud of the DSO, the Brasil Guitar Duo, and the whole team involved in its creation.  We’ve made something really special, and it is an honor to have that recognized in such a visible, global way.”

News24.com: South African Anthem partly arranged by Mzilikazi Khumalo

Mzilikazi Khumalo

2018-09-28

The current anthem was officially adopted in 1997
In 1994, it was initially proclaimed that South Africa would have two national anthems – namely Nkosi Sikelel’iAfrika and Die Stem. In 1996, former President Nelson Mandela called for the two to be combined and shortened, thereby forming the national anthem we know today, which was adopted in the Government Gazette No. 18341, dated 10 October 1997.

It contains the languages of the 5 most populous of SA’s eleven official languages
The South African anthem contains four stanzas which consist of 5 of our eleven official languages – namely isiXhosa, isiZulu, seSotho, Afrikaans and English.

The melody of the song was arranged by two people
Although the arrangement of the melody is widely accredited to Jeanne Zaidel-Rudolph, a renowned composer, pianist and teacher, the South African anthem was also arranged, in part, by Mzilikazi Khumalo, a composer and Professor of African Languages. While Khumalo was tasked with arranging the first half of the anthem, Zaidel-Rudolph arranged the last half of the piece and also wrote the English section of the song.

U.S. Open Event Heralds New Facility as a Major Multicultural Tourism Draw
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (September 26, 2018) – Philanthropists, professional tennis elite and  community leaders gathered during a private reception at the 2018 U.S. Open to raise awareness and support for the ATA/ATEF (American Tennis Association/American Tennis & Education Foundation) National Tennis Center coming to Greater Fort Lauderdale’s Miramar Regional Park. The event, hosted by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, included addresses from Katrina Adams, Chairman of the Board and President of the United States Tennis Association, and Stacy Ritter, CEO and President, Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.
“I applaud Greater Fort Lauderdale’s efforts to create a facility to train and support young tennis players of color to help them achieve life goals on and off the courts,” said Katrina Adams, Chairman of the Board and President of the United States Tennis Association. “I’ve advocated for many years to make tennis more diverse and Broward County’s national training center is a big step in that direction. It is facilities of this nature that help young people build athletic skills and gain the confidence they need for personal success. Plus, at the ATA/ATEF National Tennis Center, they will be surrounded by reminders of the great Black players that pioneered the sport before them.”
“The ATA/ATEF National Tennis Center will be an important addition to the South Florida landscape, bringing together the rich history of black tennis in one central location,” said Albert Tucker, VP of Multicultural Business Development at the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. “The complex will include the ATA corporate headquarters, a national training facility for promising young players, and the Black Tennis Hall of Fame showcasing historic memorabilia.”
Having recently obtained building permits, the ATA/ATEF National Tennis Center groundbreaking is expected in 2019 and will be home to the following:
- 20,000-square-foot Black Tennis Hall of Fame
- ATA/ATEF headquarters
- Large center court with seating for 3,000
- More than 20 auxiliary courts
- Clubhouse with locker rooms, treatment areas and fitness center
- 125-room hotel for athletes, their families and visitors to stay during tournaments
According to Stacy Ritter, the facility is also a major step in attracting multicultural travelers to the destination for competitions, training and vacation stays. “We are thrilled to have the ATA/ATEF National Tennis Center in Broward to further our reputation as being diverse and welcoming. It will also draw attention to the growing appeal of West Broward, having multiple collegiate and national sports venues.”
The ATA/ATEF National Tennis Center, expected to be tournament-ready by 2020, is anticipated to bring immediate economic benefit to the community through conferences, training, and travel.

Chicago Tribune: Chicago Sinfonietta: James P. Johnson's "Drums - A Symphonic Poem"

James P. Johnson

The Chicago Tribune

By Howard Reich

September 25, 2018

Immigrants built this country, and if you don’t believe it, you weren’t at the opening of the Chicago Sinfonietta’s 31st season Monday night in Orchestra Hall.

This intrepid organization , which continuously redefines what a symphonic concert can be, on this evening explored “ID: Images of Diversity.” Meaning that every work on the program represented a distinct cultural tradition, all of which – like the ethnicities they represented – found a home in America.

***

At the end, the actors delivered the Emma Lazarus poem inscribed at the base of the Statue of Liberty, including the immortal line: “Give me your tired, your poor….”

With the orchestra stirring in the background and an image of the statue on the screen, you had to be fairly hard-hearted not to be moved.

But that wasn’t the evening’s only homage to cultural diversity.

How often, after all, does a symphonic concert present orchestral work by the great jazz/stride pianist James P. Johnson? Not often enough, a situation addressed when Chen led the orchestra in Johnson’s “Drums – A Symphonic Poem.” The piece paired Roaring ’20s rhythms with European symphonic instrumentation, its exultant finale ranking among the composer’s most compelling work.
