Romance
The
Works list tells us William Grant Still wrote Romance,
for
saxophone and piano,
in
1954. It was published in New York by Bourne in 1966, with a
dedication to Sigurd Rascher: “Originally intended to be a movement
of a larger work. Duration: 3:00. Library: Library of
Congress.”
Romance
has been recorded many times.
It
is included in the CD But
Not Forgotten: Music by African-American Composers, by
clarinetist Marcus Eley and pianist Lucerne DeSa, Sono Luminus
DSL-92156 (2012). The time is 5:13. Marcus Eley writes in the liner
notes: “This composition, originally composed for alto saxophone,
has been arranged for clarinet and piano. It is essentially a love
song without words.”
