Judith Anne Still: 'At one time, Micro Magazine in Europe said that WGS was the Dean of American Composers.'

[Judith Anne Still (William Grant Still Music)]

Earlier today AfriClassical posted: “Comment at LIFE.com: 'William Grant Still was also an All-American Composer.'” That was a response to a statement at LIFE.com which said he was “Known as the 'Dean of American Negro Composers.'”

Judith Anne Still is the daughter of William Grant Still, and her exceptional efforts to preserve his legacy include management of William Grant Still Music, at williamgrantstill.com, as we mentioned in our comment. Her comment is:

“This is excellent, Bill. I love it. Thank you for this.

“At one time, Micro Magazine in Europe said that WGS was the Dean of American Composers. My father told them that Howard Hanson really deserved that honor, but Aaron Copland gathered the press around him and announced that he had been dubbed the Dean of American Composers.
