Peoria Journal-Star: Notable African-American women celebrated in Core Ensemble's production of 'Ain't I a Woman'
Feb 6, 2016
PEORIA — Methodist College will host “Ain’t I a Woman” by the Core Ensemble at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Room 104, Methodist College campus, 415 St. Mark Court. The presentation is free and open to the public.
The performance will be in a new format called Chamber Music Theatre, which was developed by the Core Ensemble. A marriage of theatrical narrative and chamber music, actress Deltoiya Goodman will portray multiple characters while interacting with pianist Byron Sean.
“Ain’t I a Woman!” celebrates the life and times of four powerful African-American women — renowned novelist Zora Neale Hurston, ex-slave and abolitionist Sojourner Truth, folk artist Clementine Hunter, and fervent civil rights worker Fannie Lou Hamer. The musical score is drawn from the heartfelt spirituals and blues of the Deep South, the urban vitality of the Jazz Age and contemporary concert music by African-Americans.
