Ignatius Sancho was painted at Bath on 29 November 1768 by Thomas
Gainsborough (1727-1788).”]
Dr. Brycchan Carey of London's Kingston University is a specialist on Ignatius Sancho, and has contributed research to the Ignatius Sancho page at AfriClassical.com. The Literary London Reading Group is an organization which began meeting monthly in March 2012. On April 30, 2012 it posted “Ignatius Sancho: An Eighteenth-Century African in London.”

“Ignatius Sancho’s (1729-1780) origins were African while his earliest memories were of Greenwich, where he was forced to work as a child slave. He persuaded the powerful Montagu family to employ him as their butler, before retiring to run a grocery shop in Westminster.
