Dominique-René de Lerma: 'University of Mississippi Press has just issued Lawrence Schenbeck's Racial uplift and American music, 1878-1943'

Within its American made music series, the University of Mississippi Press has just issued Lawrence Schenbeck's Racial uplift and American music, 1878-1943 (xi, 317p; ISBN 978161703201; $60),  The six chapters offer details and discuss the environments of James Monroe Trotter, W. E. B. DuBois, R. Nathaniel Dett, Nora Douglas Holt, and the impact of the Rosenwald philanthropy, as the evolution of African American music and musicians progresses into the days following the Harlem Renaissance.  The one major disadvantage is the publishers' practice of having footnotes as inconvenient backnotes, minimizing their immediate significance to the text.  The 16-page bibliography is a symptom the dozen years of research invested in this study by the professor at Spellman College.
