'My Castle On The Nile: Illustrated Sheet Music By Black Composers 1828–1943,' Cincinnati Main Library to Feb. 28

Prof. Dominique-René de Lerma, http://www.CasaMusicaledeLerma.com, comments on the sheet music cover art for My Castle On The Nile included in yesterday's post on the current exhibit, open until February 28, 2011 at the Main Public Library in Cincinnati: “My Castle On The Nile: Illustrated Sheet Music By Black Composers 1828–1943,” curated by Dr. Theresa Leininger-Miller. Prof. De Lerma says:

My castle on the Nile is a hit song from J. Rosamond Johnson's 1901 musical, The sleeping beauty and the beast.”

Above is the complete poster for the exhibit curated by Dr. Theresa Leininger-Miller of the University of Cincinnati. Prof. Dominique-René de Lerma is principal advisor to AfriClassical.com. For the site's page on Francis B. Johnson he contributed research and a complete Works List for the composer. He writes:

“Francis (or Frank) Johnson was the first major bandmaster in the U.S. It has long been thought he was born in Martinique, but it is now believed he was born in Philadelphia, known there as a professional musician by 1812, probably as a violinist.”
