Annelle Gregory Shines In 150th Emancipation Proclamation Concert

I was able to attend another event on September 22nd wherein one of GLB’s scholarship winners was a participant.

This time, at 7:30 PM, it was the John Malveaux MusicUNTOLD program’s 150th Emancipation Proclamation Concert at the AT&T Center Theatre/Auditorium in Los Angeles. In addition to Annelle Gregory, such international musical luminaries as Donnie Ray Albert, Sanford Allen, Polli Chambers-Salazar, Latonia Moore, Jammieca Mott, Nokuthula Ngwenyama, George Shirley, Richard Thompson and Althea Waites were also performers on this program. KUSC Program Director & Executive Director Gail Eichenthal was the MC for this exceptional event. In addition to me, other GLB members in attendance were Danellen Joseph, Sandy Wheeler, Henrietta Fortson and Charles Dickerson. The talent displayed in this hidden away venue on South Olive Street was equal to anything going on at either the Music Center or Disney Hall.

Annelle Gregory’s soulful, heartfelt interpretation of William Grant Still’s Summerland was the equal of any of the performances that evening. She not only once again displayed her exceptional, God-given talent; she also shone a bright light on the quality of talent that represented the Georgia Laster Branch in particular, and the National Association of Negro Musicians as well. Congratulations, Miss Gregory – and continue to let your extraordinary light shine.
