Pulitzer Prize-winning
composer, pianist and educator George Walker died August 23, 2018 at the age of
96. As best I know, George Walker’s last major composition was Sinfonia
No. 5 “Visions”. I have a copy of the Albany recording and a copy of the score.
George Walker was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic 100th
anniversary season for spiritual arrangements to be sung by Tenor Lawrence
Brownlee and bass-baritone Eric Owens. See https://www.laphil.com/events/performances/278/2019-03-13/eric-owens-and-lawrence-brownlee-craig-terry/
It
is my best judgment that
the arrangements were not completed before his death. George Walker’s
life and music are appropriate to spotlight in major symphony halls
during the commemoration of 400 years since slavery began in 1619
MusicUNTOLD congratulates African American Chamber Music Society for scheduling a performance of
George Walker's Sinfonia No. 5 “Visions” with speakers on February 9, 2019 at
Crenshaw United Methodist Church, Los Angeles.
