Music of William Grant Still gave the soloist a respite, with In Memoriam: For Coloured Soldiers Who Died for Democracy
making an apt prelude to the more somber final songs. Still’s
six-minute tone poem is cast in the form of a lyrical idyll with elegiac
English horn solos.
