Young Cellist, Violinist Win 15th Annual Sphinx Competition at Hill Auditorium

First Place Junior Division Laureate, violinist Ade Williams and First Place Senior Division Laureate, cellist Gabriel Cabezas featured above, during the 15th Annual Sphinx Competition.


The Finals Concert for the 15th Annual Sphinx Competition presented by the DTE Energy Foundation with additional support provided by Pickard Family Fund, took place yesterday, at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor, Michigan with the exciting Senior Division performances. In the end, Gabriel Cabezas, cellist, won First Place as well as the first-ever Audience Choice Award sponsored by Mercedes- Benz Financial Services.

Second Place went to Francisco Vila, cellist, Third Place Danielle Wiebe, violist, and Fourth Place Rainel Joubert, violinist.

On Friday, violinist Ade Williams, 14, took First Place at the Junior Division Honors Concert, also at Hill Auditorium. Second Place went to cellist Lev Mamuya, 15, and Third Place to violinist Tristan Flores, 13.

The Competition participants performed with the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra throughout the week. The Sphinx Symphony Orchestra is comprised of professional musicians from around the country, receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts and performed under the direction of prominent conductor and music director of the Oakland East Bay Symphony, Michael Morgan.

The Catalyst Quartet, featured guest artists at the Finals Concert, performed a new work by Sphinx Alumna and Van Lier Composer Fellow at the American Composers Orchestra, Jessie Montgomery, entitled Strum (2012) for String Quartet.
