CHICAGO (10/21/2019) - South
Shore Opera Company of Chicago brings together a family of
extraordinary Chicago artists who have amazed audiences throughout the
company’s 10 years.
Maestro Leslie B. Dunner will lead this impressive roster of classical singers which includes Carl
Alexander, Warnell Berry, Jeffrey Burish, Brandon Brown, Dana Campbell,
Leah Dexter, Adrian Dunn, Cornelius Johnson, Kimberly Jones, Joelle
Lamarre, Luther Lewis, Elizabeth Norman, Adrienne Price, Robert Sims and
Vince Wallace in a musical chronicle of the company’s history of
performances, with pianist Paul Hamilton and a chamber orchestra. The
Company’s founder Dr. Marvin Lynn returns as a special guest to perform and to celebrate the organization’s many accomplishments. The concert will also feature Shannon Washington of South Chicago Dance Theatre, in choreography by SCDT Artistic Director Kia Smith.
Highlights of the concert will feature selections from William Grant Still’s Troubled Island, Rated #1 by the Chicago Sun-Times for “Chicago’s best classical music/opera moments of 2013,” Nkeiru Okoye’s Harriet Tubman, Steven M. Allen’s The Poet, as well as a piece by Shawn Okpebholo and selections by Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Bizet, Gershwin and more. There will be special memorial tributes to opera legend Jessye Norman and to André Previn and Toni Morrison from their collaboration Honey and Rue.

Chief Program and Civic Engagement Officer of Navy Pier and champion of
Chicago’s vibrant arts and cultural scene, is the Honorary Chair of the
event, which is South Shore Opera’s annual fundraiser.

Now celebrating its 10th Anniversary, South Shore Opera Company (SSOCC)
has been serving the South Shore community and Greater Chicago since
2009. SSOCC is committed to building community through music and
presenting the works of rarely-performed composers whose contributions
to music deserve recognition in the history of classical music and the
arts. The company is Arts Partner in Residence at the South Shore
Cultural Center, performing in its historic Paul Robeson Theatre,
presenting performances of the highest caliber by the brightest and best
professional classical singers in Chicago and providing free music
education programs to students in Chicago Public Schools.
