Jonathon Heyward will take over from Jamie Phillips as assistant conductor of the Hallé from the 2016/17 season.
The two year appointment will involve assisting Sir Mark Elder and
other visiting artists, acting as music director of the Hallé Youth
Orchestra and conducting concerts with the Hallé.
The 23-year-old recently won the Grand Prix at the 54th International
Competition for Young Conductors in Besançon, and in 2013 he became the
youngest ever semi-finalist at the Blue Danube International Opera
Conducting Competition. He studies with Sian Edwards at the Royal
Academy of Music and is also associate conductor of Hampstead Garden
Opera.
Born in America, Heyward began to study conducting under Andrew Altenbach at the Boston Conservatory.
