Dear CBMR Constituents and Friends,
As
you may know, Columbia College Chicago has embarked on a series of
initiatives this year outlined in our new Strategic Action Plan. One of
those initiatives is to more closely integrate the work of the Center
for Black Music Research (CBMR) with our curriculum while maintaining a
commitment to documenting, preserving, and disseminating information
about black music, and to fostering an environment for new scholarship
in the field. As first steps in that process, we are aligning the
operations of the CBMR’s Library and Archives with the Columbia College
Chicago Library.
With
the support of the Dean of the Library, Jan Chindlund, and both Library
and CBMR staff, the Center for Black Music Research will continue to
serve as a nexus for all who value black music. We will actively provide
stewardship for the collections and facilitate broad access to the
materials for the public, for students, faculty, and staff at Columbia
College Chicago, and for scholars and enthusiasts from around the world.
Melanie Zeck will remain Managing Editor for the Black Music Research Journal,
working closely with Gayle Murchison, General Editor, to ensure
continued publication of scholarly work related to the philosophy,
aesthetics, history, and criticism of black music.
We
are also very pleased to announce that Dr. Rosita M. Sands, Interim
Chair of Music, and Dr. Nathan Bakkum, Associate Chair of Music have
agreed to serve as Interim Director and Interim Associate Director,
respectively, of the CBMR. They will lead a search in the next year to
hire an associate or full professor in Columbia College Chicago’s Music
Department to serve as the new faculty Director of the CBMR, beginning
in the fall of 2017.
We
thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to engaging
with you and continuing the pursuit of our shared goals and mission.
Sincerely,
Suzanne Blum Malley, Ph.D.
Senior Associate Provost
Columbia College Chicago
