AACI Announces 2015 Concert Dates - African American Composer Initiative News

African American Composer Initiative

We are happy to share news about our 2015 Eastside College Preparatory School Benefit concerts. Yes, concerts! This year we look forward to welcoming our growing audience at two performances – Saturday, January 24 and Sunday, January 25, both at 3 pm in the beautiful Performing Arts Center of Eastside Prep. Advance tickets will be available in the fall.

Our core group of performers and guest artists, including the incomparable Valerie Capers, John Robinson, Jim Kassis and John Worley, will return to the Eastside stage, along with the Eastside Choir under the direction of David Chaidez to present a rich and varied program of music by African American composers, spanning the worlds of jazz, spirituals, freedom songs, and art music, including a vibrant new jazz/classical crossover trio for Picasso Ensemble by John Robinson.

In our 2015 concert, entitled "Walk Together", the 50th anniversary year of the passage of the Voting Rights Act, we pay homage to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the courageous  civil rights activists, from youth to the elderly,  whose efforts changed our nation. We will perform spirituals that reflect Dr. King's ideals of equality, justice, and peace, as well as music composed in his honor by Valerie Capers, Lena, McLin, and Joshua McGhee.  AACI gratefully acknowledges the Musical Grant Program of the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music for providing a grant to commission a new composition by McGhee.

Video from our 2014 concert will soon be available on our website. Video from our 2010 - 2013 concerts is viewable now.

We wish you all enjoyable summer days and will send another update in the fall! We appreciate the enthusiasm and interest of each audience member as we joyfully share this bounty of music!

Sincerely,

Jodi Gandolfi, LaDoris Cordell, and Deanne Tucker
