Eric Conway: BuzzFeed.com: 'African American opera singers are some of the most successful in the world'

Marian Anderson

Eric Conway, D.M.A.:

Hello everyone,

Over the years, Morgan has been blessed to have many outstanding voices, all of whom were attracted to Morgan because of the choir. Many of these voices, post Morgan, have gone on to have very successful careers. In the pop world, most recently Morgan's own Maysa Leak has received a grammy nomination for"Best Traditional R&B Performance". In the classical world, we have many artists who are making it big - especially singing Opera.

Please click on the link below to see two former Morgan alums who are heralded as being one of the best Opera Voices in the World!

Soloman Howard, Class of 2008, in my estimation, perhaps one of the most unique bass voices in the world, is touted as an up and coming Star!!!! Soloman is singing the title role in the new acclaimed Opera "Approaching Ali" and given much acclaim by the press. I was very fortunate, as a new director of the choir, to have Soloman in my choir for as many as four years! As impactful as his voice was in my ensemble, his leadership off the stage was even more impressive.

Issachah Savage, a Music graduate from Morgan (Class of 2003), who happened to be at Morgan just last week for a Master Class is featured also! Issachah made such an impact on our program when he was here, always mesmerizing the audiences with his piercing sound. Issachah just won a the 2012 Marcello Giodani Vocal Competition!

This article comes on the heels of our Opera Productions in Murphy Fine Arts Center this past weekend!

Please read the blog as well as click on the YouTube Links to hear these voices!
