Performs at Lincoln Center's "American Songbook" this January
On November 23, Lawrence Brownlee makes his role and company debuts at the LA Opera in a new production of Mozart's The Magic Flute as Tamino. He will be joined by Janai Brugger, Erika Miklosa, Evan Boyer, and Rodion Pogossov.
The Magic Flute is
co-directed by Barrie Kosky and Suzanne Andrade with projected
animation by Paul Barritt, co-founder with Andrade of the London-based
theater group 1927. Receiving its world premiere early this year by
Komische Oper Berlin, this innovative staging of The Magic Flute combines
live performance with silent film and animation to create an immersive
experience. At the LA Opera, the spoken sections will be conveyed
through silent films, projected texts, and colorful animations with
which the singers will interact with. Tickets can be found here.
Brownlee will greet the new year with a performance at Lincoln Center's
"American Songbook" on January 29, 2014. He will perform music from his
recently released album, Spiritual Sketches, with pianist Damien Sneed. Spiritual Sketches is at once a re-imagining of and a love letter to a traditional art form. Brownlee recently performed selections from the album at a NPR "Tiny Desk Concert". Sneed,
who composed the new spirituals, writes, "Our aim and goal was to pull
from the incredible historical legacy created by
composers such as Harry T. Burleigh, Hall Johnson, Margaret Bonds and
even Moses Hogan while including elements of American jazz music and
gospel music from the African-American church experience. My hope is
that these arrangements expand the listening audience of this art form
while simultaneously bringing attention to its rich heritage." Tickets can be found here.
