Conductor and and founder of the Urban Philharmonic Darrold Hunt
has died. According to a communication sent out by the Dupont Circle
Symphony on Thursday, Nov. 7, Hunt died on Wednesday, Nov. 6 in his
Dupont Circle home after spending a few days away in the hospital. At
this time, there are no further knowledge of specific arrangements.
A graduate of the Juilliard School of Music in conducting, Hunt
served for four years as Assistant Conductor of the Baltimore Symphony
and three years as the conductor/music director of the Conservatory
Orchestra at the Brooklyn College School of Performing Arts.
He has been guest conductor of the National Symphony, The Detroit
Symphony, The Pensacola Symphony and many others. Hunt founded the
Urban Philharmonic in 1970 as an expression of his primary commitment
was "the presentation of programs of musical excellence to those areas
of the urban community which for social and/or political reasons have
not enjoyed live professional orchestral concerts as a part of their
lives."
Performances under his direction have been greeted by the press with
exceptional reviews, even from the late music critic Paul Hume, who was
often very hard to please.
