The Little Song That Wanted To Be A Symphony
Musical Story
Music by William Grant Still
The Master-Player Library
Flagstaff, Arizona
Composer William Grant Still had a multi-ethnic heritage and a universal
vision. As an endearing father, he also composed music specific for
children. The average age of African American attendees of classical
concerts is gray/white and dwindling. Main stream institutions such as
Los Angeles Philharmonic and Los Anngeles Opera have educational and youth
programs/departments targeting youth to replenish aging audiences. Los
Angeles has at least three multi-ethnic youth orchestras targeting
youth of color. Let us encourage all orchestra administrations to visit
or revisit William Grant Still's 'The Little Song That Wanted To Be A
Symphony' to help expand diversity in classical music and
build/replenish audiences.
