Kazem Abdullah To Conduct Mark Dornford-May's Production of Scott Joplin's 'Treemonisha' in Paris

On June 2, 2009, AfriClassical posted: “Kazem Abdullah Conducts U.S. Tour of Orquestra de São Paulo in 2009-2010 Season.” We wrote that Kazem would continue as Assistant Conductor and Cover Conductor of the Metropolitan Opera, under the direction of James Levine, while conducting the U.S. Tour of the Orquestra de São Paulo.

His personal website gives details of the Tour's rigorous schedule of 12 concerts in the month of October 2009. The first is in Lawrence, Kansas on Oct. 9; the final presentation is on Oct. 24 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Brazilian composer Marlos Nobre has written Concerto No. 2 for Percussion and Orchestra, which was commissioned by the Orquestra de São Paulo for Dame Evelyn Glennie, considered to be the only full-time classical percussionist in the world of classical music.

Kazem is scheduled to conduct the Dayton Philharmonic on December 4 and 5, 2009. He will then conduct the Chicago Sinfonietta, designed as a model of diversity by its Founder and Musical Director Paul Freeman, on January 16, 2010 in Naperville, Illinois; January 17 in River Forest, Illinois; and January 18 at Orchestra Hall in Chicago. On February 6, 2010, Maestro Abdullah will conduct the Huntsville Symphony in Huntsville, Alabama.

On his website, the conductor also indicates he will conduct Scott Joplin's Treemonisha from March 29 to April 9, 2010 at the Theatre Musicale de Paris – Chatelet. Mark Dornford-May of the U.K. Will direct a new production of the Joplin opera.
