John Malveaux: Efffective boycott of 'Bicentennial Symphony' of Roy Harris was undermined with amateur performance at Juneteenth 2009 in Long Beach, Ca.

John Malveaux of MusicUNTOLD.com writes:

POLITICS of MUSIC
American composer Roy Harris was born on February 12th as was Abraham Lincoln. Roy Harris 'Bicentennial Symphony' (14th Symphony) premiered under the baton of Murray Sidlin and the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center Feb. 10-12, 1976.  The symphony has been effectively boycotted coast to coast by major, regional, community, and youth orchestras (including two African American founded orchestras in Los Angeles). The effective boycott was partially undermined in 2009 when the Long Beach Central Area Association partnered with City of Long Beach Parks Recreation & Marine and presented a FREE OUTDOOR amateur performance at MLK Jr Park in Long Beach, Ca. to celebrate the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln during  Long Beach annual Juneteenth Celebration.  Please see Africlassical blog
