NAACP President to Commemorate African Maafa in New York City 7 PM Sept. 18

Event to honor ancestors and mark African holocaust in Brooklyn, NY

BALTIMORE (September 17, 2018) – On Tuesday, NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson will speak at the 24th Commemoration of The Maafa at the St. Paul Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York at 7pm EST. President Johnson will address the relevance of the African Maafa and the current struggles of people of color in the US and abroad.
“We stand on the shoulders of giants who suffered through the horrendous Middle Passage and fought tooth and nail over generations for the freedoms we exercise today. It’s important we honor them by continuing the fight to advance freedom and opportunity for the next generation,” said Johnson.

Since 1994, the St. Paul Community Baptist Church has transformed into The MAAFA Museum as part of an annual Commemoration of the MAAFA.  During this walking tour, visitors will walk through time reliving experiences from African, American and African-American history.

The MAAFA Museum features authentic slave artifacts from the African Relic Museum in Walterboro, South Carolina and features art, wood carvings, quilts and historic vignettes.  The MAAFA Museum tour is appropriate for adults and students in grades 4 and higher.

A term meaning terrible occurrence or great disaster, the Maafa represents a way to discuss the historic atrocities and impact of the African Slave Trade.
