Harlem is one of America’s most important cultural centers, and there is no better advocate of the Harlem spirit than Dance Theatre of Harlem. Founded shortly after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to inspire children with dance, Dance Theatre of Harlem has developed into an outstanding institution that comprises both a school and a professional company.
Its founder, Arthur Mitchell, was a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. Its current artistic director, Virginia Johnson, was a Dance Theatre of Harlem founding member and principal dancer.
The program includes Brahms Variations (2017) by Robert Garland; Change (2016) by Dianne Mclntyre with music by Spelman College Glee Club and Eli Fountain; Le Corsaire Pas de Deux, a showpiece excerpt from Marius Petipa's 1864 full ballet with music by Riccardo Drigo; and Vessels (2014) by Darrell Grand Moultrie with music by Ezio Bosso.
