Afro-American Chamber Music Society Orchestra
Awarded California Arts Council “Local Impact” Grant
State funds extend the reach of the arts to local
underserved populations
In Los Angeles, CA – The California Arts Council announced its plans to award $3,200 to AACMSO as part of its Local Impact program.
The
Local Impact program fosters equity, access, and opportunity by
providing project and partnership support for small arts organizations
with operating budgets under $1 million. All projects extend the reach
of the arts to underserved populations that have limited access to the
arts.
With
support from the California Arts Council, the Afro-American Chamber
Music Society Orchestra will engage in the "Black Music Legacy
Project" with a 40-member multigenerational choir conducting one
Masterclass, 12 rehearsals, and two concerts to preserve
African-American folk songs and Spirituals by composers of the African
diaspora. The dates set for the concerts are September 24 and February
18 featuring works by Dett, Still, Hairston, and others. The concerts
will be conducted by Professor Janise White and Dr. Zanaida Robles, both
graduates of the University of Southern California Thornton School of
Music.
“We are deeply honored to be recipients and participants of the Local Impact Grant to
further perpetuate the legacy of Negro Folk and Spiritual songs through
dialogue, narrative, language
and performance. Our objective is to engage audiences in African
American culture with the outcome of expanding an awareness and
recognition of the folk songs incorporated in the Black symphonist
repertoire.” AACMSO Director, Janise White
