South Shore Opera Company celebrates Leontyne Price’s 90th birthday and Black History Month February 26, 4 p.m. with the premiere of The Violet Hour

South Shore Opera Company celebrates Leontyne Price’s 

90^th birthday and Black History Month February 26, 4 p.m. 

with the premiere performance of Joelle Lamarre’s The Violet Hour,

at South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 South Shore Drive.

 

The Violet Hour explores the career of internationally

acclaimed soprano Leontyne Price and how she rose

to prominence during the 50’s into the 60’s, despite the

segregation and discrimination which was prevalent in

America. The Violet Hour  traces Ms. Price’s journey from

the early beginnings of her career up to her final performance

of the opera, Aida at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1985.

Written and performed by acclaimed soprano Joelle Lamarre, 

who starred last October as Harriet Tubman in SouthShore Opera’s 

Midwest premiere of Nkieru Okoye’s “Harriet Tubman: When I 

Crossed That Line to Freedom”
