AUGUST WILSON MONOLOGUE COMPETITION
Of 133 Southern California students who initially auditioned for the August Wilson Monologue Competition, 12 have been selected to participate in the regional finals to be held at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles on Feb. 27. The National August Wilson Monologue Competition is a free arts education program that celebrates the work of playwright August Wilson and is intended to inspire high school students to find and express themselves through theater.
Among the finalists is Orange County School of the Arts student and Long Beach resident Hannah Franklin. As a finalist, she will receive training and rehearsal sessions with theater professionals provided by Center Theatre Group to help her prepare for the finals in February when she will perform her monologue in front of a panel of judges.
From the regional finals, the top two students are invited to move onto the national finals which will take place on May 1 at the August Wilson Theatre on Broadway. Winners of the national competition will receive an all-expense paid trip to New York City, will have an opportunity to attend a Broadway show, and will be awarded college scholarship monies.
