Marian Anderson said "As
long as you keep a person down, some part of you has to be down there
to hold him down, so it means you cannot soar as you otherwise might". This
quote was shared by KUSC Classical Radio host, Rich Capparela, during his opening comments to a full SGI Auditorium in Santa Monica, Ca. on January 16, 2016. A Tribute to Marian Anderson featuring
soprano Caroline McKenzie was first half of a annual Martin Luther King
Concert by the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra under the direction of
Music Director/Conductor Guido Lamell. Before the creditable and nearly
exact Lincoln Memorial performance by soprano Caroline McKenzie, Dr.
Robin D.G Kelley, professor at UCLA, provided the historical record and
his family's personal relationship with Marian Anderson. The Lincoln
Memorial performance witnessed by approximately 75,000 was organized by
Howard University and associated sponsors. MusicUNTOLD presented a
concert to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of 13th amendment at DAR
Constitution Hall on November 21, 2015 with participation from Howard
University (Bison Color Guard, Soprano Liana Valente, Pianist/Composer
Karen Walwyn, Howard University Choir, and Dr. Edna Green
Medford - historian/lecturer).
