On November 1, 2014, the Oberlin Orchestra with Raphael Jiménez, conductor and guest violinist Gregory Walker perform his father's Poeme for violin and orchestra. George Walker, a 1941 Oberlin alumnus, won the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for music for his composition Lilacs. He was the first African American to receive this honor. In 1999, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and in April 2000, Walker was inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in a ceremony at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. in 2014, he was honored by National Association of Negro Musician at their annual convention held in Los Angeles.
