The Colorado Symphony is honored to host the Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. Concert & Humanitarian Awards at Boettcher Concert
Hall on Tuesday, January 15. Now in its 23rd year, this annual
celebration recognizes four humanitarian leaders who live and lead in
the example of peace and equality exemplified by Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr.
Conducted again by Joseph Young, the Colorado Symphony celebrates
the life and legacy of Dr. King with a classical program that exhalts
both the hardships and heroism of the Civil Rights Movement.
Performances by Denver’s Spirituals Project Choir, led by Artistic
Director Bennie L. Williams, reprise traditional African American songs
that empowered and nurtured those who were among the movement’s early
workers. Denver-based violinist Jeff “Maestro” Hughes adds a modern
touch to the traditional program. Tamara Banks returns as host.
This year’s program commemorates two important milestones in the
Civil Rights Movement: The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, and
Dr. King’s historic “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” written in 1963.
While honoring the impact of these historic events, the theme of
“Injustice is Still a Threat” acknowledges the many challenges that
remain in the fight for a fair, equitable and peaceful world.
