[Scraps From The Operas Arranged For Two Guitars By Justin Holland © 2009 Donald Sauter]

Justin Holland (1819-1887) was an African American composer, guitarist and teacher who is believed to have been Cleveland's first African American professional. He is profiled at AfriClassical.com Guitarist Douglas Back has made a recording which includes five works of the composer, American Pioneers of the Classic Guitar, Mento Music Press SMM 3023 (1994). It can be ordered at his Web site, http://www.DouglasBack.com

On January 28, 2009 AfriClassical posted: “'Scraps From The Operas' by African American Composer Justin Holland Recorded in MP3 Format.” Donald Sauter has contacted us again with information on his new website: “About a year ago I finished a recording project of Justin Holland's 'Scraps From The Operas For Two Guitars.' Since then, my site has moved, due to the geocities shutdown, and I've put all 20 complete Opera Scraps on my site for free download or listening. The starting point is my main Justin Holland page:
http://www.donaldsauter.com/justin-holland-guitar.htm I hope some of your AfriClassical visitors will enjoy them. Thanks! Donald Sauter”

Scraps From The Operas is also available as a CD, at Donald Sauter's website, for $3, including postage. Another interesting development is the “Holland Guitar Project,” announced by the Yale School of Music Alumni Newsletter:

“Kimberly Perlak ’01MM Guitar
To support the Holland Guitar project – Austin, TX, an educational project focused on the relevance of classical guitar to youth with special emphasis placed on its African‐American roots (Justin Holland, 19th-century African‐American guitarist/composer). During the two‐week project, each school will host a performance and discussion of Holland’s compositions, culminating in a one‐day arts festival featuring student performance, visual art and writing..” In January 2010, AfriClassical exchanged email with Kim Perlak, who expresses interest in our work on Justin Holland.
