Award-winning Brazeal Dennard Chorale presents Holiday Concert 4 PM Sunday, December 4, 2016 at Gesu Church, 17180 Oak Drive, Detroit, Michigan

The Brazeal Dennard Chorale, shown during rehearsal, consists of local singers representing all walks of life.

DETROIT/Nov. 24, 2016—The award-winning Brazeal Dennard Chorale, under the artistic direction of Alice McAllister Tillman, will present its 45th annual Holiday Concert on Sunday, Dec. 4 at Gesu Church.

The concert will feature a diverse musical program designed to usher in the holiday season including carols, classical works and sacred Negro spirituals performed by the 40-plus members of the Brazeal Dennard Chorale.

““We are preparing literature that is challenging and exquisitely beautiful, ” Tillman said. “The repertoire will demonstrate the Chorale’s ability to be sensitive to the specific needs of each piece and genre represented.  We look forward to presenting a program that will be enjoyed by all.”

General admission tickets for the 4 p.m. Holiday Concert performance are $25. Concert tickets can be purchased in advance by contacting the Chorale office at 313-331-0378 or online at www.BrazealDennard.com.  Tickets also can be purchased the afternoon of the concert at Gesu Church, located at 17180 Oak Drive in Detroit’s University District.

“The Chorale is extremely excited about performing at Gesu Church for the first time because it connects us to our community roots,” said Chorale Executive Director Yvonne Turner, who also sings soprano in the group. “We want to give the community—especially people who may not know about the Chorale—a chance to hear us, see us and be a part of us.”

Named after its legendary founder, the late Brazeal Dennard, the Brazeal Dennard Chorale’s mission is to “remember, discover, preserve, and share the Negro spiritual as a part of the artistic community, and to rediscover and perform significant choral works by African American composers.”  The Chorale, whose members represent all walks of life, won gold and silver medals at the 2012 World Choir Games.   To learn more about the Brazeal Dennard Chorale, please visit www.BrazealDennard.com.

Sergio A. Mims: Chineke! Foundation: Chineke! violinist Elodie Chousmer-Howells appointed 2017 NYO [National Youth Orchestra] Leader

Elodie Chousmer-Howells
(Chineke! Foundation)

Sergio A. Mims forwards this release:

Congratulations to Chineke! violinist Elodie Chousmer-Howells, who has been announced as the new leader of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (NYO)!

Elodie, now in her third year with the NYO, studies at the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music and has performed with both the Chineke! Orchestra and Chineke! Junior Orchestra.

The seventeen-year-old from Chelmsford credits Classic FM for introducing her to popular orchestral repertoire and, in her year as leader, hopes to encourage the orchestra to think about how orchestral music connects to the modern world. Elodie says: ‘NYO is an orchestra of teenagers that wants to connect, through classical music, to other teenagers. I can’t imagine a greater privilege or better use of such an amazing pool of talent.’

Delos: Happy Birthday Lawrence Brownlee! [This year, bel canto tenor extraordinaire Lawrence Brownlee’s birthday falls on Thanksgiving day!]

Lawrence Brownlee
(Delos)

This year, bel canto tenor extraordinaire Lawrence Brownlee’s birthday falls on Thanksgiving day! So we relish this opportunity to combine our warmest birthday wishes with not only our boundless pride, but also our sincerest expression of THANKS that we can claim Larry as a Delos artist.
Acclaimed worldwide as perhaps the greatest bel canto tenor before the operatic public today, Larry has been showered with awards and distinctions – not the least of which are the honors accorded to his two vocally spectacular Delos albums:

Lawrence Brownlee Bel Canto Arias Allegro io son

Virtuoso Rossini Arias (DE 3455) was nominated not only for for a 2016 Grammy award, but was also nominated for the best vocal recital prize in the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA): Europe’s equivalent to our American Grammy competition. And again this year, his Allegro io son album (DE 3515) has garnered yet another nomination (same category) for the ICMA’s top prize in 2017! And we’re keeping out fingers crossed for another Grammy nomination (to be announced in two weeks). For both albums, Larry shares the spotlight with maestro Constantine Orbelian and his Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra.

What more could a label hope for from one of its artists? So, Larry, as you combine your birthday and Thanksgiving celebrations this year, know that all of us at Delos will be giving thanks for YOU and your peerless artistry!

Rebeca Omordia's Oct. 14 performance including 5 of Fred Onovwerosuoke's 24 Studies in African Rhythms Receives 5-Star Review in Birmingham Post, in UK

Rebeca Omordia and Fred Onovwerosuoke

Rebeca Omordia writes to Fred Onovwerosuoke:

Dear Fred,

Hope you are well. I mentioned I performed a recital at Birmingham and Midland Institute on 14th October that included 5 of your 24 Studies in African Rhythms. I received a wonderful 5* review in Birmingham Post! I'm quoting below the section that refers to your African Studies:

"... Rebeca Omordia is a generous ambassador for Nigeria's music, and she concluded with five movements from Fred Onovwerosuoke's 24 Studies in African Rhythms. These were rhythmically exhilarating, and surprisingly western-influenced, melodies and textures sometimes evoking Chopin, and the energetic Raging River Dance 2 sounding as though it could certainly have been composed by Bartok. Ear-refreshing, concise and intriguing, these miniature gems were joyously laid before us by this dedicated and committed young advocate."
Christopher Morley, Birmingham Post , 20 October 2016

Very best,

Rebeca
