Work, John Wesley, III, 1901-1967
He was born in Tullahoma TN.  His grandfather, known as John I, had been a church musician in Nashville.  His father, John II, taught history and classics at Fisk from 1898.  His mother was Agnes Hayes Work, and his brother was Julian Work.  He began the study of piano at age 12 and  studied at Fisk University’s Laboratory School, High School, and University (B.A., 1923).  He secured additional training at the Institute of Musical Art starting in 1923, [Footnote: Horne 1991, p196, indicates he remained at the Institute until 1934.]where he studied with Gardner Lamson (and privately as a voice student of
Lamson to 1927), Columbia University Teachers College (M.A., 1930) with
Howard Talley and Samuel Gardner, and at Yale University (B.M., 1933) as a
student of David Stanley Smith.  He had begun composing while in high school
and collected spirituals throughout his life.
He began teaching  at Fisk University in 1926, where he reassembled the Jubilee Singers, remaining there, chairing the music department from 1951 to 1957,  until one year before his death when he was named professor emeritus.
He was granted  two Julian Rosenwald Fellowships (1931 and 1932), was given first prize in 1946 by in the America Composers Competition, and an award from the National Association of Negro Musicians (1947), and in 1963 was given an honorary doctorate by Fisk University.
His music is held by the Fisk University Library on microfilm, with the originals held in a vault.
He was survived by his wife, Edith McFall Work. A son, John Wesley Work IV, did not continue the family’s music tradition, opting instead for business, but served as baritone soloist on the LP recording of The ordering of Moses, by R. Nathaniel Dett, conducted by Wiliam Dawson ==.
The John W. Work Chorale was active in Chicago in the 1990s, led by Delano O'Bannion.
