Talk about determination! When she was 14 years old, Californian soprano Angel Blue (her real name) set her heart on attending the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. For most adolescents, even after passing the audition for the exclusive fame academy, the daily 250-mile round trip from her high-desert home in Apple Valley would have put an end to such ambitions. But not Blue. She and her parents would get up at 4.30am and drive an hour to the nearest railway station, from where Blue would take the train for another 90 minutes to school – a routine she kept up for three years.

Afterwards, when she wanted to study music at university, her mother suggested that she might fund herself by taking part in beauty pageants (having three older sisters complete college educations meant money was tight when it was her turn). Fortunately, Blue had the advantage of being 5' 11", very attractive and, of course, a gifted opera singer. One can only feel sorry for the other contestants who faced her stepping up to sing. ‘It was fun,’ she enthuses. ‘I am thankful to say that I always won the talent competition and interview.’
